About

A Salisbury production partner for crews who make television news and live shows, working since 2014.

Who we are

A studio production partner built around working crews

breaknixup was founded in 2014 in Salisbury to support the people who make television news and live shows. We cover studio setup, camera operation, lighting, sound and live workflow planning. Our aim is workflows that look and sound right on air and can be repeated show after show.

Starting from the studio floor

Our work begins with watching how a studio actually runs. Before suggesting any change, we want to see where the crew stands, how signals travel, how presenters are lit and where messages get lost between gallery and floor. That habit comes from years spent in studio galleries, and it keeps our advice practical rather than theoretical.

Treating the studio as one system

Cameras, lighting, sound and the running order all affect one another. A beautiful lighting plan is little use if the camera operators cannot hold a steady shot, and clean audio means little if cues are late. We plan the areas together so that improvements in one place do not create problems in another.

Teaching routines, not just techniques

Training is hands-on and uses your own equipment and show material. We coach framing, smooth moves, microphone placement and cue discipline, then repeat them until they become routine. The goal is a crew that stays confident under live pressure and can carry on without us.

Staying for the first shows

A new setup is only proven once a real programme goes out. We stay close during the first runs, watch for small issues and adjust levels, cues and lighting as the team settles in. Leaving written notes behind means the improvements last beyond our visit.

How we help

What working with us means for your studio crew

Our approach is shaped by the realities of broadcast work: fixed transmission times, small crews and little room for error. Each part of what we do is meant to make the daily routine calmer, so people can concentrate on the programme rather than the equipment.

  1. Studios that run from day one

Careful planning of layout, cabling and signal paths means fewer faults when a studio first goes live. Labelled connections and a tested setup make problems easier to trace, so the crew spends its time making programmes.

  2. Steadier, more confident camera work

Coaching on framing, smooth moves and shot discipline helps pedestal and robotic camera operators deliver a consistent picture. Confident operators also respond better when a running order changes at short notice.

  3. Presenters lit consistently

Lighting plans balance look, safety and speed of rigging. News sets stay consistent from shot to shot, and presenters look natural across a whole bulletin, whatever the camera angle.

  4. Clear sound and calm communication

Careful microphone placement, mixing and monitoring keep dialogue clean in busy live settings. Cue sheets and crew communication plans mean everyone knows what happens next and who is responsible.

Services

What we stand for

  1. Precision

Small details decide how a programme looks and sounds. We check signal paths, framing, levels and cues carefully, and we document what we set up so it can be repeated and corrected quickly.

  2. Clarity

We explain our recommendations in plain language and leave written notes your crew can use. On air, clarity also means clean dialogue, clear cues and straightforward communication between gallery and floor.

  3. Teamwork

A studio works only when camera, sound, lighting and gallery pull together. We train and plan with the whole crew, listen to the people doing the work and build routines that everyone can follow.
